Michelle Knudsen
I'm a writer, editor, book lover, movie lover, science fiction and fantasy addict, occasional community theater actress, perennial allergy-sufferer, and cat owner, among other things. Most of my published work so far is for children (twenty-eight books out in the world so far; thirty-eight if you include the coloring books), but I also write fiction and non-fiction for adults.
Like many writers, I've been writing for about as long as I can remember. When I was little (see photo at left), I mainly liked writing poems. I started writing short stories in high school and college, but never really thought about writing children's books until I was hired as an editorial assistant in the children's division of Random House. I wrote several books for Random as part of my job (children's book editors sometimes write books "in-house") and eventually began writing and submitting my own manuscripts.
I left Random House several years ago to move upstate, but I still edit the Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park (published by Random House) on a freelance basis. When I'm not editing Junie B. or working on a new children's book, I sometimes work on projects for older readers. Mostly that means science fiction and fantasy short stories (none published so far), but I've also published a few magazine articles over the years on topics ranging from online resources for tropical fish enthusiasts to senior-year college relationships.
I recently moved to Brooklyn, New York with my diabetic cat Cleo.
