My short story
By No one
He saw his friends in the time of their greatest need. Again. Through the crystal ball, he could see anything at any time. Of course, the ball did not belong to him. Not in ages past. But one does not acquire such a powerful artifact for five hundred winters in the Northern Kingdoms without developing a feeling of ownership upon him. But it was a part of the deal. The part he fulfilled, anyhow. As he looked around, a feeling of sadness dwelled into his mind. The tower wasn’t very fancy, nor furnished. His past glory long gone, only rats and old cheese remain within the cellar he learned to hate. The walls were made of solid identical grey bricks. Only two shelves were in the room. On one laid ancient books, containing unknown knowledge in unknown languages for an unknown time period. The other one had several objects that were thought to be gone for a long time; a perfect silver diamond, shaped as a ball, a monstrous white skull on a black, complicated looking stand which seemed to be swallowing the light instead of reflecting it, and a bizarre looking cactus that had the disturbing habit to shrink whenever you got near it. If any human was fool enough to look to the ceiling, he would die of fear. The ceiling was gone, and instead you could see the universe. The dim light in the room came from the thousands of suns in the distance. But none of that could help. Not him. Not them. Not now. Yet again, a light came from the heavens, and burned the enemy’s figure in the crystal ball. He remembered that day, when the devil appeared out of nowhere, one hand holding an enormous sword and another holding a giant rock. Holding his David Shield, he prayed to God to save him, in exchange for immortal hell. God refused the deal, but saved them. Deciding to seal the deal, he went into exile, vouching to never return. The black figure screamed, as the light consumed it. If anyone would look at the skull, he could swear the jaw bones twisted downwards. But nobody would.
