South Africa is the heart of this book. Yes, it is a story about decisions, about keeping tradition or leaving it, following others or making your own way- but all of these important subjects could be in any other book. What separates this novel is the fact that the reader can really feel South Africa, not only as a place to live but also as a land of many cultures, the individuality and also the problems. Inside the main story of the novel the author invests a lot in showing the reader his view on South Africa. He opens the first part of the book by describing the landscape, the mountain the fields, and the small peaceful towns. On the train with Kumalo the reader gets a chance to "see" South Africa. The reality that Paton describes happened all over the country, the flow of people that come from the villages to the cities in hopes to live a life of honor.
