Fascinated by the strange, bearded figs growing on this easternmost Caribbean island, 16th-century Portuguese explorer Pedro a Campos named the land after them - 'Los Barbados', meaning 'the bearded ones'. But it was the English who in 1627 first colonized the island, located about 250 miles off the coast of Venezuela.
