The Avro Lancaster is one of the most well known and revered aircraft in aviation history. The RAF's heavy bomber was developed during the early years of World War 2 when Britain's only means of taking the offensive to Germany was through the Royal Air Force's strategic night-bombing campaign.

Nineteen Lancasters took part in this raid in May 1943, and eight planes were lost. The 1,000-bomber raid on Cologne led by Bomber Harris and the sinking of the Tirpitz when it was holed up in a Norwegian fjord using 5-ton Tallboy bombs were also key Lancaster raids which changed the course of the war.
