Beautiful and sophisticated socialite Gloria Baker lives a charmed life until, one tragic evening, her husband is killed in an automobile accident. She is overcome with grief until she discovers that he was not the man she believed him to be. Gloria, devastated, moves back to her parents home in Monroe, Louisiana, where she becomes reacquainted with Jackson Montgomery, a local carpenter. At first she ignores him, deeming him a failure because he is only a lowly carpenter who still lives in the same small town.
