This is a chronological account of the campaigns on the Eastern Front during World War II that traces the Soviet counteroffensive around Stalingrad to the final destruction of the Ostheer. This day-by-day account allows the reader to obtain an understanding of the scale of the conflict and to assess the impact of distance and time upon operations; alternatively, specific battles can be studied in detail. By covering each combat sector—from the encirclement battles in the north to the sweeping advances in the south—this study highlights chosen areas of operations in isolation while also assessing their impact upon the wider campaign.
