Lauryn Killpepper must choose one of the dolls in her mother’s doll collection for her ninth birthday, but when she learns her mother’s first doll was abandoned at some farmhouse years ago, she chooses that doll, and her relentless desire to find Betsyanna takes the family on an unforgettable adventure to a dilapidated farmhouse, gutted with rats. Along the way, the family pauses to admire some of nature’s secret spots, admiring plants and animals, but a furious bull creates a tizzy. At the farmhouse, they search for Betsyanna, but they cannot find her. While her mother and brother are enjoying a picnic lunch, Lauryn sneaks away and creeps into the crawlspace of the shabby old house. She grabs a splintered slat and jabs intensely at the powdery grime. She cannot find the doll, gives up, and straddles a beam, but when she slips off the beam, she lands on a bumpy clump…...
